Notes:		 He was a son of John I of Arkel and Bertha van Ochten . It was 1269 before a minor, so the regency was observed by his mother. Jan comes in several deeds for. In 1273 he bought the port of Gorinchem of the Count of Bentheim . From 1277 under the leadership of John II built miscellaneous dikes, such as the Zouwendijk "a dike between the rivers Lek and Den Donk. Also, there embankments were put into the Alblasserwaard to the Giessen [1] . Gorinchem arose around the first wall and were founded the first public buildings, such as the Holy Spirit Chapel, the Hospital Chapel and the Chancellery [2] . In 1281, he was beaten knighted by Floris V , Count of Holland. In 1288 he participated in Brabant side at the battle of worringen . In 1290 he acknowledged Floris as his lord for his castle in Gorinchem and received in return the right to make tolls. Jan was one of the signatories of a letter from the Dutch nobility to King Edward I of England . Floris borrowed in 1292 12.000 Dutch pounds of Jan van Arkel, Richoud of Noordeloos (no doubt a cousin of Jan) and the Vriese Lambrecht. When Floris was assassinated in 1296, Jan took with Mr Wassenaar and of Borsselen Holland governance temporarily in itself. In 1297, he was killed at the Battle of Vronen . He was buried in Gorinchem. Jan married Bertrouda of Fort Deposit, daughter of Gerard van Sterkenburg, with whom he had three children;
