Nathaniel Masters
Notes:
It is debated if he was a son or grandson of John Masters. He in John Andersons will and the relationship was not clearly stated. But based on the age I would posit son. Nathaniel was undoubtedly connected with John Masters of Cambridge and Watertown who willed to Nathaniel and Abraham Masters 19 Oct. 1639, although without stating the kinship: "to Nathaniell Masters ten pownds to Abraham Masters ten shillings, Also my minde & will is that the ten pownds I give to John Lockwood & the ten pownds I give to Nathaniell Masters shal be layde out upon somethings that may turne to the encrease of theire portions ffurthermore my will is that these leagacyes shal be well & truly discharged within six monthes after my wives decease..."[1] The fact that Nathaniel and Abrahams legacies were invested implies that they were not of age at the time of the will. John and his wife Jane arrived on the "Arbella" in Winthrops fleet in 1630 with Sarah, Lydia, Elizabeth, Nathaniel and Abraham Masters, however, this child Nathaniel (and Abraham as well) was probably too young to be his son. Perhaps the Nathaniel and Abraham mentioned in the will were his grandchildren or perhaps nephews? Its possible that our Nathaniel was Johns son if his wife Jane was considerably younger than he. The article on John Masters in The Great Migration is of the opinion that Nathaniel and Abraham were the grandsons of John. In the Salem court for 29 June 1654 Nathaniell Masters was presented for his wife being with child by him before they were married; the act having been committed in Pequott harbor. Certificate of the fact to be sent to that town.[2] In Feb. 1649/50 Nathaniel was a grantee in New London. Nathaniel had both Manchester, MA and New London, CT grants in 1651. He had a York grant in 1666 although his wife was still in Essex County in Nov. 1667. He took the freemans oath at Wells in 1670. He signed a Wells letter about Indian affairs 25 Apr. 1689 but was back in Manchester May 1702.[3] "I John Maisters of Wells… with ye Consent of my father Nathll Masters doe bind my selfe an apprentice to William Partridg of Wells Carpenter… the full & Just tearme of foure years… The sayd apprentice his sd Maister faithfully to serve, his lawfull secrets keepe, hee shall not play at unlawfull games, nor unseasonably absent him selfe from his sayd Maisters business, hee hsall not frequent Tavernes, nor lend, nor spend the goods or victually of his sd Maister, without his leave, hee shall not Contract Matrimony, or Committ fornication, but truly & trustily observe his sd Maisters lawfull Comands as a faithfull servant out to doe The sd M
