Samuel was a housewright, and famous in Essex County for his intelligence and enterprise as a contractor and builder. He erected at least one hundred houses and stores in Marblehead; for the material he sent to Manchester, where there was a saw-mill and an abundant supply of timber. In 1745, he is spoken of as Justice Samuel LEE, Esq., a very wealthy merchant and owner of many warehouses. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1740. In 1732 he was chosen Commissioner to arbitrate in regard to the famous (Gloucester) Dog Town dispute. Those familiar with Manchester history need not be told that Samuel LEE was a person whose reputation made him a reliable person to trust with this delicate mission. The penmanship of his report shows that he was a gifted man. He owned many slaves and ships and had a fine library. He journeyed to England a number of times and brought back a parchment pedigree of the LEE family of Lea Hall, entitled LEE Genealogy, beginning with Sir Walter LEE (temp. Edward III), and tracing the family down to The Most Noble and Puissant Lord George Henry LEE, Earl of Litchfield, Viscount Quarrendon, Baron Spelsbury and Baronet, through Sir John LEE, John LEE, who m. Margaret HOCKNELL, Sir Henry LEE, K. G., champion of Queen Elizabeth.” This pedigree emblazoned on sheepskin was owned by General LEE at the time of his death in 1891. Samuel LEE, Esq., also brought back the LEE arms, a fess between three crescents, which may be the coat of arms now owned by a gd. son of General LEE, inscribed, “The Right Honorable George Henry LEE, Earl of Litchfield,” etc., corresponding to the description of the parchment, “Pearl, a Fess between three Crescents Diamond, Supported by two Lyons,” etc He served as Town Clerk, Selectman and Moderator many times. He left $500 to educate the poor. He removed in 1743 to Marblehead, where he d.; m. (firstly) 8th October, 1712, Mary TARRIN, b. at Marblehead, 27th July, 1690, d. before 1745, dau. of “Gen.
